Strategy Team Presents on Coconut Coop and Processor Trade Association
26 February - Fred Levitan, Prosperity Initiative's Strategy Manager, presented on the benefits of forming a grower cooperative and processor trade association to provincial officials and other actors in the coconuts value chain in Ben Tre, Viet Nam during the "Coconut-Potentials and Opportunities Workshop."

The presentation was based on results from Prosperity Initiative's initial analysis of the sector, which demonstrated a need for greater structure and a higher level of cooperation within the industry.

Prosperity Initiative Presents at Ben Tre Coconut Festival
On 15 January, Prosperity Initiative's Strategy Team was invited to present at Ben Tre province's annual Coconut Festival. The seven day festival, held by the Ben Tre Provincial People's Committee (PPC) - Prosperity Initiative's main partner in the province - offered tourists, businesses and investors an opportunity to learn more about the economic potential of the coconut industry in Ben Tre.

Fred Levitan, Prosperity Initiative's Strategy Team Manager, presented on the local industry's potential to develop high value products to help raise incomes in the province, where the coconut industry makes up more than 50% of the local economy.

Prosperity Initiative Board Grows to 5 Members
Prosperity Initiative is pleased to announce the addition of two new members to its Board. Albert Tucker and Duncan White have joined John Marsh, John Sayer and Nigel Smith to expand the Board from three to five members, with a majority of non-executive board members.

Prosperity Initiative Cambodia and Lao PDR
Dr. Martin Albani, formerly Head of Prosperity Initiative's Provincial Portfolio Programme, now heads Prosperity Initiative's operations in Lao PDR as the new Country Manager Lao PDR. Matthew Greenwood, formerly Head of Prosperity Initiative's Programme Services Unit, has relocated to Phnom Penh to lead a World Bank Funded bamboo handicraft project in Cambodia.

Their moves represent the first formal steps of a regional presence outside of Viet Nam. Industrial bamboo and bamboo handicrafts are currently the two main projects in Lao PDR. In Cambodia, handicrafts are the main initial area of intervention.

 
Prosperity Initiative Presents at IPSARD Vision 2020 Workshop
On 4 December, the Institute of Policy and Strategy for Agriculture and Rural Development (IPSARD), one of Prosperity Initiative's most important partners in Viet Nam, held a workshop describing the vision for its future. IPSARD shared this "Vision 2020" with a large audience, including stakeholders from Government, donors, partners and clients. The agency set out its future as the leading provider of agricultural and rural development analysis and policy advisory services for the Government and people of Viet Nam.

Speakers included Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mr. Cao Duc Phat, Vice-Minister Mr. Nguyen Viet Thang, the Head of MARD's Crop Production Department, Mr. Nguyen Tri Ngoc, and the Director-General of IPSARD, Mr. Dang Kim Son, as well as donor representatives such as Mr. Andreas Zurbrugg, First Secretary (DC) at AusAID in Hanoi. Prosperity Initiative was honoured that its Director of Programmes, Mr. Nigel Smith, was invited to address the audience about its successful partnership with IPSARD.
