A Study of Farmer Perceptions of Change in Thanh Hoa's Bamboo Sector

A technical report by Prosperity Initiative, IFC and IDS carried out to demonstrate economic impact on households in the bamboo industry in 3 districts of upland Thanh Hoa, Viet Nam to show the poverty impact potential of this industry.

2010 Thanh Hoa Bamboo Impact Assessment Report (pdf, 1.36M)
The follow up to Prosperity Initiative's 2008 report, this 2010 report examines the impact of the industrial bamboo subsector on three upland districts in northwest Thanh Hoa based on a survey of 210 farm households and 110 bamboo traders. The report shows that projected increases in the price of bamboo can translate to more than 62,000 people leaving extreme poverty and up to $4 million more income for poor people in these districts.

Assessing Alternative Poverty Proxy Methods in Rural Vietnam (pdf, 1.21MB)
Co-authored by Linh Vu and Bob Baulch. This paper evaluates four ‘short-cut’ methods for identifying poor households using representative household survey data from rural Vietnam. It recommends the poverty probability method is the most accurate and robust ‘short-cut’ method for measuring poverty for specific sub-populations or in years when household surveys are not available.

Provides an overview of international markets of greatest potential interest to the current Mekong Bamboo Sector Feasibility Study. The objective was to inform the strategic decision making process on the market potential for 10 selected markets. Prepared for Oxfam Hong Kong and IFC Mekong Private Sector Development Facility, May 2006.

The study provides an evaluation of the potential of the Mekong bamboo sector via analysis of resources, technology processes, product markets, input markets, and institutional contexts. It combines the collection and analysis of primary data from fieldwork in the three countries with international research on technologies and markets for bamboo.
